Self Sustainable Dairy Farm

Costa Rica is one of the three countries in Latin America which is an exporter of milk ( Argentina and Uruguay being the other two), with a long and successful history. Pozo Azul is located in the hot and humid tropical rain forest area of Costa Rica, which seems in conflict with the natural environment needed for Holstein cows. Sarapiqui is a conservationist and ecologically conscious community, were the river has been declare a National Monument, and protected by Law against any type of abuse, and Pozo Azul is surrounded by community of La Virgen, and the milky parlour only 60 meters away from the river. Manure from the main barn is treated in an anaerobic digester to eliminate odors, produce methane to run a generator. Making the dairy self sufficient in electricity and producing a natural fertilizer to replenish nutrients in the soil to produce corn silage to feed the cows. They also use Vermiculture , this is the use of earth worms to transform manure into high quality humus, this humus is rich in nutrients and beneficial micro organisms which makes it an excellent fertilizer, also produce a repellent effect so insects like flies are kept away. - Presentation on operation principles and special features needed to operate in the tropics and be sustainable - Tour through the dairy including: barns, silo, biodigester electrical generator, control room and milk parlour and vermiculture. - Bilingual guide - Refreshments - Written material - Lunch at Selva Verde Restaurant

 

Self Sustainable Dairy Farm + Sustainable Pinneaple Plantation

After lunch we will visit a pineapple plantation that has been treated with biodegradable fertilizer and manage in a sustainable way. It belongs to a jam producer named ¨Angel¨

 

Arenal Volcano and Tabacon Resort
Dificulty:   

This is the main volcanic attraction of the country's northern region. Dating back 2-3 million years, this peak has an almost perfect cone-shape, soaring 5,360 feet into the sky. You may decide to enjoy a thermal bath at the nearby Tabacon Resort, where hot subterranean mineral waters, coming from the volcano with temperatures close to 95º F, are canalized through several swimming pools. An exquisite dinner will be served at this place while we admire the splendid view of the volcano. We will stay here part of the early evening and, depending upon weather conditions; we might be able to see a volcanic eruption.

Rafting Sarapiqui River ( Class II, III )

This free-flowing river has its origins in clear mountain streams, and remains one of Costa Rica's purest river experiences. The narrow, low-volume Sarapiqui winds and stretches its way through thick and colorful vegetation that is home to hummingbirds, toucans, woodpeckers, and scores of other native tropical bird species. Excellent for bird-watchers and other nature lovers, this rafting journey offers moderately flowing rapids that are interspersed with quiet stretches in a magnificent forest setting. After an early morning pick-up from your hotel.
Arenal Volcano Rainforest Surroundings

We start with 25-minute drive to the West side of the Arenal Volcano, where we will hike through the rainforest. During the hike it is possible to see many plants, birds and other animal species that call the rainforest home. Through out this exciting tour you will be reminded of the power of nature each time you hear the volcano's activity. We will get close enough so that you can enjoy the eruptions of the volcano, but always from a safe distance. After that, we will take you to a viewpoint where you can watch the volcano while enjoying a drink.
Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge

This tour starts with an approximately two-hour drive to Los Chiles. Our guide will describe the most important sights along the way including orange groves, and fields of papaya, passion fruit, yucca, cacao, ornamental plants, and sugar cane. On arrival in Los Chiles we will take a 15 minute break at a small local restaurant before continuing the tour. After the break we will take a two hour ride up the Frio River in a covered boat to the entrance of the refuge. Along the way we will be able to see some of many species that inhabit the area such as sloth's, iguanas, caimans, lizards, bats, three kinds of monkeys as well as a wide variety of flora and birds.
Fortuna Waterfall

This unforgettable adventure begins with an hour horseback riding through beautiful trails where the panoramic views surround the area. A local guide will join you during the trip, combining the ride with and exciting bike down to the swimming hole. There you will find huge rocks where you can sit and relax before hiking back up. The spectacular waterfall and the lush forest gives a sample of the rich nature that abounds in this zone. We recommend this tour for people in good physical condition. Take a bathing suit, towel, long pants and hiking shoes.
Peñas Blancas River Floating Tour

From La Fortuna we will take a twenty minutes drive to the Peñas Blancas River to start the tour. Here we will start our trip of approximately two hours in an inflatable raft (no motor) on the lower, slower moving section of the river. You will be able to hear the sounds of nature as our guide describes the flora and fauna of the region. During this time it is also possible to see howler monkeys, crocodiles, toucans, two species of sloth's and different bird species. Once we complete this first part of the tour its time to visit the farm of Don Pedro where he and his family will be waiting for us. You will be able to shake his hand, calloused from years of hand work, and while you enjoy a snack you will be able to ask Don Pedro and his family questions which will invariably be answered with a smile. After visit with Don Pedro we will journey into the farm's Primary Tropical Rain Forest. There we will find trees over 100 years old and have the opportunity to see the Blue Jean Frog (Dendrobates pumilio).
Arenal Volcano By Night

07:00 Tour to the Arenal Volcano ( 4hours driving time ) We will tour the Arenal Volcano surroundings in, this is an active volcano in a clear day lava can be seeing running on the side of the volcano, some of its activity are gases, ash , and of course its hot springs of Tabacon resort where we will have lunch and relax in the hot springs all this surrounded by an ever green rainforest. 19:00 Arrival time back to the hotel.
